The Destiny of the CIO
As business executives and managers develop into expert customers of
IT, the CIO's destiny is to emerge as the
executive director of
investments in change
Say Hello to the CIIO
In fruITion,
the CIO who narrates the story - Ian - decides to call his ultimate role the CIIO (Chief Internal Investments Officer) to
distinguish it from external investments
in Mergers and Acquisitions.
Why is the CIO destined
to become the CIIO? Because there in many companies there is a
huge and under-exploited opportunity to create much more value from
investing in change. The issues that many organisations face
with IT are a reflection of their own internal investment culture, and are not
caused by IT itself.
CIOs themselves have predicted the future destiny of their role as an
executive director of business change, as Chris highlighted and explored in
his 'think tank' column for CIO.com "Tools
for Leading Business Change"
As
one of Chris's CIO clients puts it:
"Firstly, we are placed in a very unique position in that we are
always operating with a panoramic view of the enterprise. The
Technology landscape these days is actually a virtual blueprint of
how the Business Operates both in terms of process and culture.
Secondly, for a long time now, IT has been very closely (and in many
cases explicitly) linked to major business change programmes. We
tend therefore to be exposed to change on a much more regular basis
than other colleagues."
What does the journey look like?
fruItion explores one scenario.
